Warning: XXX Marketing Idea Enclosed
I want to preface this article by stating I am dead serious with what I am about to share and have zero intention of offending anybody. If you become squeamish or immediately want to opt off my email list, I want to challenge you to take a deep breath and turn your marketing radar onto its highest setting to see if you can use this idea in your business.
Getting people’s attention and response is getting more difficult every day, which is why this particular idea may be so effective for you.
If you are an avid student of marketing and copywriting, you understand the importance of copywriting and word choices. Top marketing copywriters earn millions of dollars, and they often spend hours of blood, sweat and tears, consternating over single word choices.
These pros understand how “mere” words paint vivid pictures in people’s minds, and they know how one simple word can have a dramatic impact on their message and ability to get people to wake-up, pay attention and respond.
The word ORGASM is one such word.
I don’t want to spend much time defending or placating the appropriateness of this word in a business blog, but if you say this word out loud to a group of adults, you will immediately get their attention.
While the word itself snaps people awake, its meaning and what it represents can be quite useful to you, since it relates to excitement and release.
And this is one of those “ah-ha” moments that can prove to be quite profitable for you and your business.
If you take the second syllable of orgasm – “gasm” – and append it to a product or word typically used in your business, you might just have a unique word that immediately paints a mental picture and gets people’s attention when used in the right context.
A quick Google search on “-gasm” resulted in others using these made-up word variations:
- Solargasm
- Foodgasm
- Chocogasm
- Ragegasm
- Shoegasm
- Cashgasm
Last summer, I coined the phrase “profitgasm” to describe how Infotail helps business owners release the profit potential in their follow-up marketing. We used this word in various event marketing pieces and banners and it definitely got attention of passers-by.
More recently, I had the opportunity to consult on the development of a full page advertisement that was going to run in an industry trade journal. Anybody who has put together such an ad knows the challenge and difficulty to get people to notice it.
Our goal was to target independent mattress retailers and get them to visit a web site for a free report. This report was based on a recent consumer study that put “buying a mattress” as the most despised household item to purchase. This was big and we knew we had to tap into this
consumer pain and lack of excitement around buying a mattress.
Since pain and lack of excitement is the opposite of a “gasm”, we said,
“There’s No Such Thing as Mattressgasms”
to paint an instant picture in the retailer’s mind of the daily battle they fight every day.
By combining this headline with an appropriate photo, the response to this ad has been so good, we are running a second variation of it in April (as a side note the managing editor of the trade magazine loved the uniqueness of the ad).
So how can you do something similar in your business?
Depending on your niche and targeted demographics, using this copywriting technique could be quite profitable for you. Of course it’s not appropriate for every market and you will need to determine the appropriateness.
To get the your mental juices flowing, I’m hosting a little copywriting contest. Here’s the challenge: come up with your own “gasm word” around your product or service and use it in a headline. The headline I think is the most unique will win free business book of their choice.
Type in your headline example below and I will pick a winner and announce.
UPDATE: Congrats to Dr. Chris Heeb, for his headline, “The Truth About Pain Relief…… There’s NO Such Thing as a Quick-fix-ogasm…” Chris contact me to receive your gift.
For my building product manufacturer copywriting clients:
“Send out marketing messages that give your prospects…
…tingles, spasms and architectur-a-gasms”
The Truth About Pain Relief…… There’s NO Such Thing as a Quickfixogasm…
And it rhymes! Nice.
Good!!!
By the way, if anybody needs more “-gasm” ideas, there was a funny SNL skit back in the 80s with Tim Kazurinsky playing Dr. Badofsky. If you Google that, you can find his list of variations (“Hockey players have Bobby-Orrgasms…”)
:::Sorry, Mike. As I was thinking a clever headline, my mind kept going back to that skit.:::
Thanks for the timely article. It gave me an idea I am going to test. I’m assembling various campaigns for a decorator that specializes in furniture and household items specifically for bachelors.
Main Headline: “How to give the ladies an instant floorgasm”
Subhead: “The perfect rug that will get her in the mood for some cuddle time as soon as she walks in the door.”
(Pic of dude and lady lounging on nice rug with wine, etc…)
Full Brewed Flavor not trapped in a bag, it’s a T-gasm!
From our auto repair shop:
“Bring your car by for it’s Spring Cargasm”
