The Perils of Business Owner Isolation
Today, it’s easier than ever to suffer from business owner isolation. Even with all of the advancements digital connectedness, business owners often find themselves isolated and running their business in a solitary, “I’m the only one“ manner.
Bill Glazer summed it up perfectly when he said, “The entrepreneur/business owner is the loneliest person on earth.”
Think about your own situation. Who do you talk to on a regular basis about business growth strategies? Who is in your inner circle where you can receive wise and confidential feedback regarding your challenges and mistakes?
Your spouse? Your family? Your employees? Your friends?
If you’re like most business owners, the answer is a resounding…
Unfortunately, the dangers of business owner isolation creep up over time and create deep, profit-sucking roots in your business, including:
- Limiting your ability to develop fresh, new business ideas
- Hindering your ability to see new moneymaking opportunities
- Focusing on the wrong things
- Losing confidence when things don’t go as planned
- An inability to bounce ideas off others who get what you do
- Feeling despair and being in a rut
All of these lead to frustration and a serious cap on your income and wealth-building opportunities.
When it comes to being connected, many business owners end up in two dangerous places.
They tend to remain isolated and have little valuable and meaningful interactions with other smart entrepreneurs and owners.
They hang out with people who don’t put the same value on self-reliance, perseverance and self-improvement. These people (and often they are family and friends) can be huge energy drains and will have a negative impact on you, whether you realize it or not.
Business guru Brian Tracy sums it up this way, “Your choice of people to associate with, both personally and business-wise, is one of the most important choices you can make. If you associate with turkeys, you will never fly with the eagles.”
As 2017 kicks off, I would challenge you to consider your own business and what level of being connected you have.
Do you have a peer “advisory board” of trusted, successful business owners who can help you see opportunities and avoid hazards?
Do you have a network of like-minded, marketing-oriented business owners who you can bounce ideas off and get honest and critical feedback?
Do you have a group of friends who you can confide in and share your challenges (and wins) with?
If not, now is the time to act and seek out opportunities to be a part of something beyond just yourself.
